The next BBR release, Sino Basila, is in production. The cover art comes to you courtesy of my longtime friend Joshua Scott bassist of Brooklyn grind killing machine Defeatist. It’s going to be a limited cd pressing of 100, each hand-numbered and hand-screened. The reason for the low volume is because I don’t see this release as being a high demand item but hopefully there will be a few of you out there that will be into checking it out.

The band comprised of me (Mike Hill) on guitar, Robin Fowler (Versoma, Battle of Wyoming) on drums and Hunter Schindo (ex-Wetnurse) on bass. We worked on the material for a few months in the spring and hit the studio over the summer. I worked on it on and off for a couple of months and finally the tracks are ready for release. Unfortunately, due to personal schedules and such, it’s unlikely that this band will be touring or playing any shows. Nonetheless, we’re all proud of the work and hope that you enjoy listening to it as much as we enjoyed creating it. If not…

Sino Basila is two tracks clocking in at over 20 minutes. It’s not an easy listen, so if you’re hanging out on a Friday night, getting ready to rock the party, I suggest that you make another musical choice. If you don’t have any friends and sit in your room all weekend, then this record is for you.

It’s been a while since the last transmission of intel from the BBR War Room. Here’s some marginally important news.

I set up a MySpace account for the label. I realized that despite, how lame I think myspace is, it’s a viable way to communicate with a large group of people. Hell, even Mike Watt and Exene Cervenka have myspace accounts!!! Anyway check it out if you want at www.myspace.com/bbrec.

In related news, Matamoros. The band that I’m doing has had to change our name. The new name is VERSOMA. Below is the reason why as explained by Brad Wallace our bass player:

“We have to change the band name. In a way though it is good news. Luckily for us a very cool guy name Ben who happens to be a Medieval history major pointed out to us that the name "MATAMOROS" may have a meaning which we were not aware of. Indeed we were not! We confess to being fully ignorant."

Well it turns out the Matamoros has a literal spanish translation. That Translation is "Moor Slayer" or "Moor Killer". If anybody needs a history refresher the Moors are a group of people that are both Muslim and North African. More specifically: 1. A member of a Muslim people of mixed Berber and Arab descent, now living chiefly in northwest Africa. 2. One of the Muslims who invaded Spain in the 8th century and established a civilization in Andalusia that lasted until the late 15th century.

So just on literal translation were dealing with essentially "Muslim Killer."

It goes a little deeper than that though. From a little research on the Net and little help from the midevil history major, it would seem that Matamoros was the name give to St. James of Compostella. He is credited with leading the Reconquista which was the movement to drive the muslims out of Spain. In essence it was a name given to man who ran his own kind of Crusades in Spain. Not the coolest guy to name your band after.

Needless to say when we found out that our band name meant "Moor Slayer" none of us even had to think twice about changing it. It's a fucked up name that we were ignorant of. We thought it was just the name of a town in Mexico. Were sorry if anybody was aware of the literal translation. It was certainly not our intent to offend anyone. We fully admit to our own ignorance and the only thing we can do now, is do the responsible thing and change the name.

We have absolutely no interest in racist, nationalistic bullshit, or anything that even resembles it. A name that glorifies the killing of North African Muslims is totally fucked plain and simple. The four of us stand firmly against this kind of shit, especially living under the spectre of the current U.S. regime and it's intolerable attitudes toward arab peoples.

So moving on past that piece of unpleasantness. The new Name is VERSOMA.

We have made a new myspace account.
www.myspace.com/versomaband

That pretty much sums it up.

Anyway, we finished recording the record, it’s been mastered my Alan Douches at the recently-relocated West West Side Mastering Studio up in Windsor, NY. Robotic Empire is releasing it sometime this summer. For new mp3’s and info on upcoming shows you can go to the myspace address listed above.

E4verything is on schedule with Defcon 4 and The Wayward. Both records are mastered and at the plant right now.

The release dates posted on the site are accurate. I’ll be doing some kind of pre-order offer at a “special price” when the time is right.

We have intel on the Spring BBR Releases.

Defcon 4 “File Under Fuck” will hit the streets on May 30, followed by the debut, self-titled full-length by The Wayward on June 6. These are two enormous records that are not to be missed.

Defcon 4 are Boston hardcore veterans and have been around for a few years and have several releases under their belt including their first record on Ammonia Records and a split with my old band, Anodyne. The new record is still intense and heavy, but more expressive for lack of a better term; loose and dangerous.

The Wayward feature ex-members of the DC band Carrion. You have some of their releases on McCarthyism in your record collection, or you may have seen them on one of their exhaustive 9 week tours. The Wayward carry on in a similar vein, but with a more “indie” vibe to the guitar stylings and vocals. It was my pleasure to engineer this record as well as release it. True musical freedom.

A new e.p. by The Heuristic is in the works for a late spring/early summer release.

In related news, I’m in a new band called Matamoros. Jamie Getz and I have been working on this on and off for over a year and we finally have a solid line-up and a bunch of songs. Greg Drudy (Hot Cross, Saetia, Level Plane) is playing drums and Brad Wallace (Transistor Transistor, Orchid, Wolves etc) is playing bass. We’re entering the Translator Audio here in Brooklyn to lay down tracks for a 5 song e.p. titled “Life During Wartime” to be released on Robotic Empire. Currently, we’re investigating show options for the late spring and summer. For now, you can check out demo’s of two of the songs in the media section.

The Wayward 7" is now available. It rocks. Due to a problem at the plant, the record will only be available on black vinyl. The band is out on tour right now, so go and see them.

McCarthy Blacklist have called it quits. If you haven’t picked up their split with Engineer, there’s still a few left.

Today, I listened to “Fixation on a Co-worker” by Deadguy. That record still gives me goosebumps. Kiss It Goodbye was great, but Deadguy was really where it was at for me. Total Travis Bickle-core. Possibly the only good record that Victory ever put out (besides Integrity maybe).

Check back shortly for more info and MP3s.

There’s a lot going on here at BBR. New records, tours, etc. The Heuristic is all set to embark on a short tour with NYC’s Wetnurse. Also, be sure to check them out at Literacy Fest along with Ed Gein, Backstabbers Inc., Animosity and more. Details on Literacy Fest can be found at www.tdbrecords.com.

The Wayward will also be heading out on the road this fall to support their new 7-in. The 7-in was a joint effort between BBR and McCarthyism. It rules, so you should pick one up. The initial run is 600; 100 on green and 500 on black. The record will be available on tour, from BBR and McCarthyism as well as through the standard distro’s (Very, Level Plane etc.). Check out the tours section for dates.

Be sure to check out The Heuristic on their upcoming tour. Check the tour section for dates over the next few weeks.

In September, BBR and Mccarthyism are teaming up to bring you a 7-in for the excellent DC-based outfit called The Wayward. I was asked to describe them and the best I could come up with is a cross between Yes and say Universal Order of Armageddon. Pick up the record and decide for yourself. 100 will be on green vinyl and 500 will be on black.

Here's a heads-up for the next couple of releases and projected dates that they will be available.

The Wayward | 7-in | September 15, 2005
Defcon 4 | Full-length | January, 2006
The Wayward | Full-length | February, 2006

As you can see, the site has come along way from being just a photo of an actor playing Charles Manson in 1968's "Helter Skelter Murders" and some text about "future releases" to an actual, legitimate Web site. All of the records that I promised to release have come out, with the exception of the Anodyne/Mustaphamond split. That project has been shelved due to the unexpected disbandedment of Mustaphamond. Pity, because they were an amazing band, and I would have loved to have put this record out.

I'm stoked about the site. It'll be expanding to include more distro information, band merchandise and other items.

Also, anyone interested in wholesale prices for their distro, please contact me directly at mike@blackboxrec.com
